Today the United Nations has a more important role to play than ever before, with new challenges facing the organisation. To respond to this new agenda, a stronger and more effective UN is needed. This is the home page of the Four Nations Initiative on Governance and Management of the UN, a Member State initiative aiming at contributing to a strengthened United Nations.

The 4NI Secretariat finalised its work on 1 October 2007. This website will therefore no longer be continually updated with new material. The 4NI is an initiative taken by four concerned members of the United Nations; Chile, South Africa, Sweden and Thailand. It is designed to be complementary to the reform agenda adopted by the 2005 World Summit and presently carried out by the UN Secretariat. Its focus is on governance and thereby on management of the Secretariat. The Initiative is characterised, inter alia, by (1) its focus on governance from a Member State perspective (2) its recognition of the need for more dialogue and process in order to build trust and a new compact between all concerned actors and (3) reaching beyond traditional groupings and alliances. The result will be available to everybody interested. It will not bind any government. The Initiative is guided by a Steering Committee consisting of a representative and alternate representative from each of the four nations. The Steering Committee is supported by a Secretariat based in Stockholm under the leadership of a Secretary-General. Read more on Introduction, Steering Committee or Secretariat.
